The Dirty Little Secret about “Motivational Speakers”

Sometimes I’m called a “motivational speaker.” Others have call me an “inspirational speaker.” Actually, I don’t care what they call me, as long as they call me!

Call NOW! Call DR. DUNAWAY NOW!!!! Book him for your next meeting NOW!!!! Call him toll free at 1-877-HCFA-SUX!!!!!

Sorry. Self-promotion is so ingrained it’s hard to get the little monkey off my back.

In truth, no one can motivate others to do anything anymore than I can get you to call me before you’re ready to.

Threats can get people to do something. But I can’t recall a drill sergeant every being termed a “motivational speaker.”

Fear drives results. Fear is a great motivator. But most “motivational speakers” don’t scare audiences. (Hey, there’s a possible new niche… “Introducing Dr. Tray Dunaway, he’s the scariest motivational speaker you’ve ever met!” Well, maybe not.)

I would venture more than a few “motivational speakers” are not really motivational speakers at all. They may be earning a living as someone who’s billed as a “motivational speaker,” but down deep, they’re not if they don’t believe their own message.

Great “motivational speakers” give people a sense of their own value and their own ability to reach places, inside and outside of themselves, that will inspire, and reveal the art of the possible. And then audiences are free to go and “get motivated” themselves.

Otherwise, motivational speakers are just cheerleaders who don’t really care if their team is winning or losing. They’re just going through the motions and earning a living as a “motivational speaker.”

I think a real motivator is someone who believes in me before I do.

And here’s the dirty little secret.

If everyone believed in everyone elses’ ability before they did… If everyone exhorted others to succeed and reach for high goals and inspired others to believe in themselves nobody would ever need a “motivational speaker.”

And I’d have to get a “real” job.
