Homecare Brings Patient Back from “DEATH!”

Teri Robotti, the physician liaison of the VNA of Vero Beach Florida, related a great story about the value of homecare and I thought I’d share it with you here on the blog.

“Joe” was a “frequent flyer” at his local hospital. Discharges resulting in unsupervised care at home lead to inevitable clinical deterioration and subsequent frequent bounce backs to the hospital.

That is until homecare entered the picture.

Joe’s physician, out of frustration, decided to take homecare up on their offer of taking care of patients who need frequent readmission.

Well it worked. So well, in fact, one of Joe’s homecare nurses had a conversation with a hospital nurse. The subject turned to Joe and the hospital nurse said she was sorry Joe had died.

“Died?” the incredulous homecare nurse said. “He’s not dead!”

“He’s not?” was the reply of the hospital floor nurse? “We haven’t seen him in months, so we though he must have died!”

Back from the jaws of death, courtesy of homecare!

This is a powerful testimonial to the value of homecare. Not only was the patient enjoying better health, he was costing taxpayers MUCH less money by staying out of the high priced inpatient hospital setting with the bargain priced homecare services.

Whose life will you “save” tomorrow by interpreting this value of homecare to physicians and other referral sources?
